WEST MICHIGAN — Many West Michigan schools are ready to start the school year on August 19! How does the weather compare this year to previous years? And what about our seasonal average?

The average high temperature in Grand Rapids in mid-August is 27.6 degrees, and the first day of last year, August 21, was sunny and 26.2 degrees.

MONDAY BUS STOP FORECAST

WXMI

Jackets may be necessary early in the day as overnight lows will drop to 10 to 12 degrees Celsius for most of the week, particularly Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

MORNING LOW NEXT WEEK

WXMI

The afternoon maximum temperatures will remain stable at 25 to 25 degrees Celsius until Wednesday. So it’s not the weather for sweating, but it’s also not the weather for making a sweater.

Shorts and t-shirts will be in fashion in the first week, but we expect more warming in the last week of August.

END OF AUGUST LOOKS WARMER!

WXMI

Any heat wave can be a cause for concern, as so many schools lack air conditioning. 2021 is an example of heat of concern, as temperatures below 30 degrees Celsius led to some days of cancellation in districts with limited cooling resources.

We haven’t had 90° in Grand Rapids since June, so the worst of the heat is behind us for the 2024 school year!
