STRIVE Skills Academy: Equipping the next generation with practical life skills – Cross Timbers Gazette | Southern Denton County | Flower Mound

The STRIVE Skills Academy, founded by Jim and Amy Murphy of Bartonville, offers today’s youth a unique opportunity by providing hands-on life skills training that goes beyond traditional education.

The Murphys, who have four children – two who have graduated from Argyle and two who are still in high school – were inspired to start the academy after noticing a gap in vocational training and shop floor opportunities in the Argyle School District. They wanted to ensure that students could gain hands-on experience in their community and give them the tools and knowledge they need to succeed, whether they want to pursue a career or become more independent.

The academy offers a wide range of courses designed to teach young people essential skills that are often overlooked in traditional school curricula. From basic carpentry and electrical work to plumbing, these courses not only teach valuable trade skills, but also help build confidence and problem-solving skills.

“The STRIVE Skills Academy is not just about teaching children how to fix or build something. It is also about giving them the confidence to tackle challenges, think critically and become resourceful people,” says Jim Murphy.

The STRIVE Skills Academy grew out of Jim Murphy’s previous initiatives, including the Entrepreneur Leadership Foundation and Argyle Robotics, both of which played a critical role in shaping the Academy’s mission. The experiences of these previous organizations, particularly Argyle Robotics, demonstrated the profound impact of hands-on learning in sparking students’ interest in STEM and empowering them to innovate.

Jim and Amy Murphy’s passion for hands-on learning and vocational training stems from their belief that these skills are essential for all young people, not just those pursuing careers in the skilled trades. Understanding the value of these jobs informs future hiring of skilled workers and ensures that students have a well-rounded perspective on the work these occupations entail. By combining technical education and leadership development, STRIVE Skills Academy prepares the next generation not only to meet the demands of the world of work, but also to lead with integrity and vision.

As the Academy continues to grow, Jim and Amy are excited to offer even more opportunities for teens to engage, learn and thrive.

“Whether through regular classes, special workshops or the upcoming teen section for extracurricular activities, the STRIVE Skills Academy remains dedicated to empowering the youth of today to become the leaders of tomorrow,” said Jim Murphy.

The Murphys invite all parents and youth in the community to join them on this exciting journey to self-sufficiency and success. Through their involvement, STRIVE Skills Academy is building a legacy that will benefit the community for years to come.
