The latest Phillies injury updates

  • Austin Hays (Sprain of the left thigh)
  • Status: 10-day injured list
  • The Phillies placed Hays on the 10-day injured list retroactive to August 8 due to a strained left thigh.
  • Hays is eligible to come off the injured list on Sunday, Aug. 18, but won’t return anytime soon. On Aug. 15, he ran “more intensely,” batted in the cage and completed his throwing program. On Aug. 16, Hays took batting practice and other fielding drills, and Rob Thomson said he appeared to be “between 80 and 90 percent.” The Phillies left fielder will face Ranger Suárez in the left-hander’s simulated game on Aug. 17. (Last updated by Ty Daubert on August 16)
  • Ranger Suarez (Lower back pain)
  • Status: 15-day injury list
  • Suárez was placed on the 15-day injured list on July 27 due to lower back pain, retroactive to July 24.
  • Suárez will face the injured Hays in his simulated game on August 17. Thomson had previously stated that the left-hander would make a total of 80 pitches between the bullpen and a live batting practice session.
  • When asked if Suárez could return during the series in Kansas City from August 23-25, Thomson said “possibly, yes.” (Last updated by Ty Daubert on August 16)
  • Spencer Turnbull (Load on the right latissimus)
  • Status: 15 days on the injured list, 6-8 weeks out
  • Turnbull had “kind of regressed,” and manager Rob Thomson said that “his lats flared up again.” The Phillies have “stepped back up a gear.”
  • Asked if he still believed Turnbull would return at some point this season, Thomson said: “I hope so, yes.” (Last updated by Tim Kelly on August 15)
  • Dylan Covey (Overload of the right shoulder)
  • Status: 60-day injured list; currently in rehab
  • Since August 9, Covey has made three rehab appearances for Single-A Clearwater and Double-A Reading. His last appearance was on August 4, when he allowed one earned run in three innings for Reading against Hartford. (Last updated by Destiny Lugardo on August 9)
  • Luis Ortiz (Tommy John operation)
  • Status: 15-day injury list
  • Ortiz underwent successful Tommy John surgery on July 11. (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on July 12)
  • Andrew Painter (Tommy John operation)
  • Status: 60-day minor league injured list
  • The most promising player in the Phillies’ minor league system underwent Tommy John surgery on July 25, 2023.
  • Painter throws 25 pitches in the bullpen every Tuesday and Friday. Currently, he only throws fastballs and changeups. Thomson did not rule out the 21-year-old pitching in simulated games — which take place under controlled conditions — before the end of the year. However, he does not believe he will pitch for an affiliated team at some point in 2024. (Updated by Tim Kelly on June 29)
