Worth County couple pleads not guilty to child abuse and child neglect charges

SYLVESTER, Ga. (WALB) – Attorneys for a Worth County couple pleaded not guilty in court to dozens of child abuse and child neglect charges.

On July 9, the state filed a 21-page indictment formally charging Jerry and Lisa Heflin.

Jerry Heflin was charged with more than 25 counts of child sexual abuse, including aggravated sodomy, aggravated child abuse, first-degree sexual contact by a foster parent, incest, and rape.

Lisa Heflin was charged with three counts of first-degree cruelty to children for “inflicting cruel and excessive physical and mental pain on a child, knowing that Jerry Heflin was engaging in sexual conduct with said child, and failing to report said conduct to the authorities.”

In May, following Jerry Heflin’s arrest, Lisa Heflin’s Sylvester business, Lizzy B’s, was investigated by officials. On Tuesday, July 9, she was arrested and booked into the Worth County Jail.

Both Heflins filed a waiver of charges on Thursday. Jerry’s statement said, “Jerry Heflin … hereby waives the charge and hereby pleads not guilty to the above-mentioned counts and charges.” His wife Lisa’s waiver said the same thing.

The next step in this case is to add it to the process calendar.
