Trent Williams’ contract situation with the 49ers is based on “good” communication – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Trent Williams’ contract situation with the 49ers is based on “good” communication – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Brandon Aiyuk is not the only big-name player missing from the 49ers’ practice. Star left tackle Trent Williams was also absent from the field during training camp.

The All-Pro offensive lineman likely wants his contract restructured; there are still three years left, but he is expected to make significantly more money in 2026 than in 2024.

San Francisco general manager John Lynch discussed Williams’ situation on KNBR’s “Murph and Markus” on Friday.

“Trent hasn’t been with us, but communication has been good,” Lynch told Brian Murphy and Markus Boucher. “Hopefully we can work things out and get Trent back here. We’re working hard on that. I know he wants (to come back here), and I know we want that.”

Lynch did not announce a timetable for Williams’ hoped-for return.

Williams, 36, appears to be looking for long-term security in San Francisco. The future Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee knows the clock is ticking on his 13-year NFL career.

According to Spotrac, Williams has three years and $77.25 million left on his current contract. However, the 11-time Pro Bowl player will receive $20.9 million for the 2024 NFL season, $23.3 million in 2025 and $33 million in 2026.

It’s imperative for the 49ers to get a deal done with Williams. San Francisco needs its superstar offensive tackle to play in the Super Bowl, and Williams will be fined $50,000 for every practice he misses.

Meanwhile, Aiyuk shows up for training and observes team activities, albeit from a distance.

But of course he also hopes for a new contract.

The 49ers have had a frustrating offseason contractually, with their stars looking for security while San Francisco as a team is losing the practice reps that are critical to building chemistry.

Regardless, the 49ers are less than a month away from facing Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets in Week 1; the clock is ticking.
