Langlade County Humane Society needs help as kennels reach maximum capacity

ANTIGO, Wisconsin (WSAW) – The Langlade County Humane Society is a little noisier than usual right now. The shelter is full with cats and dogs.

Some parts of the new shelter are ready for occupancy, but not all of it. The shelter is therefore using all the resources at its disposal to accommodate these animals.

There is some barking and a few meows from outside the shelter. This is because every single spot for these animals is taken and while they would love to get the foster and adoption papers in hand, some animals just aren’t ready yet.

You may have heard the rumors online. The Langlade County Humane Society recently had two litters of puppies, but these puppies were just born. They are not yet available to see and still need to be spayed and neutered.

“We’re behind on our spay/neuter operations, but next week I think we’ll have 10 dogs spayed/neutered and the week after that we’ll have 10 cats,” said Robert Zoreitch, president of the Langlade County Humane Society.

There are currently about 70 cats and around 30 dogs living in the animal shelter.

When you go outside, you can see that every single kennel is full. Even though they have the new space, it’s not ready yet, so they’re adjusting.

“We’re trying to set up some temporary kennels outside and are actually thinking about getting our van out of the garage and putting a kennel or two in the garage as long as it doesn’t get too hot,” Zoreitch said. “We have a portable air conditioner, hopefully it works, so we’re working on that right now.”

It is also possible that some of the animals should not be adopted because they want to return home.

“People who have lost their dog need to call us and ask,” Zoreitch said.

If you can’t adopt but would like to help, the shelter is always looking for volunteers.

“They don’t have to clean,” Zoreitch explained. “They can cuddle the cats, walk the dogs, help at the animal shelter by raking leaves, cutting grass or helping us paint.”

The shelter says it will post on social media when the puppies are ready for fostering and subsequent adoption. You can also adopt an animal from the Wausau shelter at Petco.
