Dodgers place Tyler Glasnow (elbow tendonitis) on the injured list

The Dodgers placed right-handed pitcher Tyler Glasnow on the injured list because of tendinitis in his right elbow, and Justin Wrobleski was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City in a related move.

The move was announced minutes before the first pitch of Friday’s game between the Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

It’s highly unusual for the Dodgers to make a roster change for the night’s starting pitcher so close to game time, but manager Dave Roberts said Friday morning in an interview with MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM that several pitchers are dealing with physical issues, hinting at an impending transfer to the IL.

This is the second IL stint this year for the 30-year-old Glasnow, who is 9-6 with a 3.49 ERA in 22 starts. He missed July because of back problems but has made four starts since then. He was scheduled to start on Saturday, with left-hander Clayton Kershaw scheduled to start on Sunday.

The Dodgers, however, have added Bobby Miller to their taxi squad for the weekend series in case an injured player needs to be replaced. He was ruled out of his scheduled start at Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday.

Now Miller is the most likely pitcher to take Glasnow’s place in the rotation on Saturday, if not longer. Juan Toribio of MLB.com reported that the decision has already been made.

Miller, 25, has a 1-2 record and an 8.07 ERA this season. He missed most of the first half of the season with a shoulder injury and was ineffective after returning. After dealing with an adductor strain, he returned to Oklahoma City and made his last start on Aug. 9, allowing three runs in 4.1 innings against the Round Rock Express.

To accommodate Miller’s return, the Dodgers will have to make another roster change on Saturday.

A right elbow injury eventually led to Tommy John surgery and limited Glasnow’s appearances with the Tampa Bay Rays to 16 games in the 2021/22 season.
