12-year-old cancer patient stops at GSU on his way to a world record

MONROE, Louisiana (KNOE) – Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel, a 12-year-old from Houston, Texas who is battling brain and spinal cord cancer, wants to be sworn in to 1,000 law enforcement agencies to set a Guinness World Record.

On Friday (August 16), his trip took him to Grambling State University, where he was named “Police Chief for a Day.”

To date, DJ has been sworn in at 844 law enforcement agencies.

What started as a personal goal has evolved into something much bigger.

“It’s pretty fun to visit all these places,” DJ said, reflecting on how far he’s come. “In all these overtime hours, to be honest, I’m always trying my best to stay awake with my dad. And five minutes later, I’m knocked out.”

DJ’s father, Theodis Daniel, said the trip had a positive impact on his son’s health.

“I have a letter from Texas Children’s Hospital saying that these police ceremonies have proven useful. Even the doctors say it’s helping him now, so they’re using it as a form of treatment for him.”

GSU Police Chief Rod Demery, who presided over DJ’s swearing-in ceremony, praised his fighting spirit and determination.

“It’s a divine calling,” Demery said. “I think it’s very natural for him to be where he is and to come here and see the joy and just find his way.”

Before DJ left GSU to continue his search, he left a heartfelt message to the community.

“I’m going to keep going until my gas tank runs out, and that means when God calls you, you never know when He’s going to call you.”
