A local nonprofit is partnering with a local laundromat to ensure families — especially children — are prepared for the return to school.

For many people, doing laundry once a week is routine. But for many families in the United States, access to a washer and dryer or regular laundry appointments is a challenge. Detroit Metropolitan Area.

“Just because the kids weren’t here during the summer, the money didn’t grow like hotcakes all summer,” Ramana Roberson said. “They’re still struggling to make ends meet.”

Roberson is the executive director of Child’s Hope, a nonprofit organization focused on child safety and prevention in communities outside of Wayne County.

Roberson said clean clothes are an important issue for families preparing to send their children back to school, even for those who wear a uniform.

Roberson said: “Mom and dad say, ‘I’m struggling. I just can’t get the laundry done.’ Either we eat or we wash these clothes, what do they choose? We have to eat. So they go to school without a uniform, and then unfortunately they get punished.”

That’s why Child’s Hope is partnering with WaveMax Laundry. On Tuesday, August 20, they will be hosting a back-to-school laundry day at the WaveMax Laundry location in Southgate.

On Wednesday, August 21st and Thursday, August 22nd, the WaveMax Laundry branch in squid will also host back-to-school laundry day events.

“I realized that laundry is one of the biggest needs for families with kids going back to school this time of year,” said Nav Gill, owner of WaveMax Laundry in Inkster. “As a laundromat owner, we had to do our part.”

Gill and Roberson said families who sign up for the Child’s Hope Back-to-School Laundry Day can wash and dry up to four loads of laundry for free. There will be drawings for laundry supplies.

Organizers said there will also be free school supplies for children ages 12 to 17, while supplies last.

“We want them to know that we are trying to help you,” Roberson said. “We understand that. We understand the struggle. So whatever Child’s Hope can do to help, that’s what we’re here for.”
