Eva Beresin (born 1955 in Budapest, HU) presents her first solo exhibition Shared fictions with Ruttkowski;68 in Düsseldorf.

Berezin’s paintings depict intimate scenes, each standing alone and yet embedded in a dialogue with one another. There is something uncanny about the prematurely aged babies and the curvaceous back of a woman in a room that seems to be dissolving. Any kind of event always happens a multitude of times: in its occurrence, its first telling, recording, reconstruction and repetition.

In Berezin’s work, this ambiguity of perspective is marked by a witness – often an animal – looking directly at the viewer as if it were involved in the delicate scene before it. Is it a blessing, a crime, or a banal moment?

A large red curtain reveals a chaotic field of vision like a stage curtain, suggesting the fictionality of historical contexts. Past, present and future collide in a sense of apocalyptic jest. In her sculptures, Beresin takes elements from her paintings and gives fragments of these shared fictions a physical presence and tangible existence.

Eva BeresinIn her works, she shows people, often herself, whose bodies are distorted, making grotesque faces and seem to merge in a bizarre way with animals such as birds or frogs. Her images are rich in detail and often contain subtle cultural references with strong symbolic power and are a testament to her thoughtfulness. A smartphone can also be seen in many of the images; themes such as beauty, self-confidence and self-acceptance are addressed here, as well as the processing of her own family trauma. The unimaginable suffering inflicted on her parents during the Holocaust is inscribed in her own physical memory and is fundamentally present in her artistic practice.

The works are able to convey an ambivalence, the motifs simultaneously reflect something humorous, witty and, upon closer inspection, reveal a melancholic absurdity, an abyss that can be sensed, a multi-layered representation of what characterizes the artist. Lightness, humor and optimism can be found alongside trauma, violence and disorientation in the infinite expanse of one’s own stories, experiences and influences.
