Rotary Club of Jackson-Old Hickory Golf Tournament to Promote Literacy and Education Initiatives for Children Throughout Madison County

Jackson, TN – August 16, 2024 – The Rotary Club of Jackson-Old Hickory is pleased to announce its upcoming “Read the Greens: Literacy Golf Tournament” on Thursday, September 5th at 12:00 p.m. at Woodland Hills Golf & Country Club. This annual event is a cornerstone of our fundraising efforts and provides critical support to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library and other important educational initiatives in Madison County.

“I am very pleased to announce that online registration is now open! We offer every member multiple ways to participate, whether you are an avid golfer or just want to support our cause.” – Club President Clint Beilke

A swing for literacy: The golf tournament plays a critical role in improving reading skills for children throughout Madison County by funding the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. This program ensures that every child has access to books from birth, fostering a lifelong love of reading. Our goal is to raise at least $4,000 annually through this event so we can continue and potentially expand our support of this important program.

Support Rotary Heart and Sole: In addition to literacy, the Rotary Club of Jackson-Old Hickory is also dedicated to meeting the basic needs of our community’s children through the Rotary Heart and Sole initiative. This program provides new socks and shoes to each child in a designated school, visiting a different school each year. With a fundraising goal of $30,000 for each school, this initiative ensures that children have the essentials they need to be successful in their education.

Start of Education and Literacy Month: The golf tournament also marks the start of our month-long focus on education and literacy in September. We invite the public to participate in the following events:

  • 16 September, 12:00: Keynote speech by Dr. Donald W. Comer – Lane College interim president will address education and literacy in Jackson-Madison County and beyond. (Rotary Club meeting)
  • 23 September, 12:00: Board for Basic Education and Literacy – Featuring Dr. Marlon King, Jackson-Madison County School Superintendent, Dr. Richard Bloomer, University of Memphis Lambuth COO/Dean, and Seth Hardin, Jackson State Community College Recruitment Director. (Rotary Club meeting)
  • 30 September, 18:00: Community Connections: Empowerment through Education – A networking event at the UT Martin Jackson Center featuring speeches from UT Martin and Jackson State Community College leadership on the topic of basic education and literacy. (Rotary Club Social)

These events are designed to be interesting, informative and open to the public, providing valuable insights and opportunities for the community to get involved in supporting education.

Join us: We encourage everyone – whether a golfer, sponsor, or community member who cares about education – to get involved in this important event. By participating in our golf tournament or one of our September events, you are directly contributing to the betterment of our community and ensuring that every child has the resources they need to succeed.
