Profile is an award-winning independent publisher seeking an experienced editor and publisher to lead our popular imprints Serpent’s Tail and Tuskar Rock.

Serpent’s Tail has been a leader in independent literary publishing for nearly forty years, publishing names such as Esi Edugyan, Carmen Maria Machado, Alain Mabanckou, Torrey Peters and Karen Joy Fowler. Tuskar Rock publishes authors such as Chris Kraus, László Krasznahorkai and Constance Debré.

We are looking for a smart, creative and ambitious person to shape the list’s commercial and critical success in the years to come.

You are at least at the level of senior editor and have at least 5 years’ experience commissioning and publishing outstanding literary fiction and nonfiction. You are willing to enjoy the flexibility and entrepreneurial spirit of independent publishing and to invest heavily in the quality and success of your titles and the overall catalog. Proven strong editing and pitching skills, critical judgment, author mentoring, agent contacts, and knowledge of the literary market are essential.

This role, reporting to the publisher, is based in London, with a minimum of three days’ physical attendance per week at our Farringdon office and flexible working arrangements by arrangement. Competitive salary dependent on experience. Benefits include 25 days’ holiday (up to 30 days with increasing seniority) plus bank holidays, pension, life insurance and annual bonus scheme for all staff.
