On 816 Day everything is celebrated in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KCTV) – August 16 may seem like a normal day to some, but for Kansas City it is a big celebration: 816 Day.

816 Day takes place on Friday, August 16th from 11am to 9pm at Power and Light

There will be small stalls, food, a children’s area, live music, dance competitions and a toast at 8:16 p.m. to round off the evening.

Deaunte Thomas brought his skills to Grand Boulevard and created a community painting that will change throughout the day.

“This is about Kansas City as a whole. You see in our community how different we are and how much we have grown,” said KCMO artist Deaunte Thomas.

This celebration began in 2015 with a Facebook post.

It has grown over the years just like the subway.

This is the first time the celebrations will take place in the Power & Light District.

“Why not? Kansas City is a beautiful and culturally rich city, so why not celebrate everything great about it, including the talented people who make the city what it is,” said Brian Benton, founder and organizer of 816 Day.

Many restaurants are participating in the event and throughout the city with $8.16 deals.

KCMO Mayor Quinton Lucas stopped by to express his appreciation to the City of Fountains.

“It’s organic. It’s about local businesses. There’s a local entrepreneur who started this day. And it’s a celebration of all that’s great about Kansas City. It’s a group of people coming together to celebrate all that makes Kansas City and Missouri great,” Mayor Lucas said. He added, “Sometimes we focus on some of the challenges, but we rarely get a chance to really celebrate ourselves. This isn’t necessarily about one group, it’s about all of us.”
