13 more books will be removed from Cobb County schools, district says

MARIETTA, Georgia (Atlanta News First) – Another set of books is being taken off the shelves of Cobb County schools.

On Thursday, Superintendent Chris Ragsdale gave the community an update during a board meeting. As part of an ongoing review process, Ragsdale said, 13 books will be removed from the school’s media centers.

According to the Cobb County School District, these are the 13 books:

  • Laid
  • crank
  • Tips
  • Press
  • Milk and honey
  • It starts with us
  • The infinite moment of us
  • Vacancy
  • Identical
  • Boys are not sad
  • Julia takes a breath
  • Monday is not coming
  • City of Thieves

These books are in addition to the seven other books that were previously removed. These books are:

  • Me, Earl and the dying girl
  • Flamethrower
  • Cover
  • It ends with us
  • The advantages of being a wallflower
  • Happy
  • Thirteen reasons why

“The district is not banning books. Instead, it is simply choosing not to make sexually explicit content available to children,” Ragsdale said.

Books have long been a hot topic in Cobb County. In August, the school board fired a Due West Elementary teacher for reading “My Shadow is Purple,” a book that explores gender.

In May of this year, the National Women’s Law Center filed a complaint against the school district, alleging that it violated Title IX and Title VI, which prohibit sex and race-based discrimination in federally funded programs, respectively.

The complaint alleges that the school district, as well as a school district in Florida, censored books and teaching materials “that feature, tell the stories of, or are written by LGBTQIA+ people and people of color.”
