Report: Long Island County is the safest county in the USA
According to a new report, 10 of the 25 safest counties in the country are in the New York City metropolitan area, and Nassau County on Long Island takes the top spot. FOX 5 NY’s Jodi Goldberg has the details of the new report.
NEW YORK – SmartAsset released its study on America’s safest suburbs for 2024 – and NY and NJ were well represented.

The financial services provider’s analysis evaluated 360 suburbs of major U.S. cities and found that “safety is a key factor in choosing a residential area for a home purchase.”
The study measured the safety level of a community by comparing rates of reported violent crime, property crime, motor vehicle deaths, drug overdose deaths, and excessive alcohol consumption.
Here are the New Jersey and New York suburbs that made the list:
- Violent crime per capita: 0.00118
- Property crime per capita: 0.01480
- Deaths from traffic accidents per 100,000 inhabitants: 4.36
- Drug overdose deaths per 100,000 inhabitants: 19.00
- Percentage of adults who drink alcohol excessively: 16.10
- Average monthly housing costs: $2,730
- Median household income: 136,806 USD
- Share of annual income spent on housing: 23.9%
Fort Lee, NJ (#17)
- Violent crime per capita: 0.00829
- Property crime per capita: 0.02450
- Deaths from traffic accidents per 100,000 inhabitants: 4.36
- Drug overdose deaths per 100,000 inhabitants: 19.00
- Percentage of adults who drink alcohol excessively: 16.10
- Average monthly housing costs: $1,939
- Median household income: 101,573 USD
- Share of annual income spent on housing: 22.9%
- Violent crime per capita: 0.00137
- Property crime per capita: 0.01007
- Deaths from traffic accidents per 100,000 inhabitants: 6.07
- Drug overdose deaths per 100,000 inhabitants: 18.39
- Percentage of adults who drink alcohol excessively: 16.40
- Average monthly housing costs: 3,051 USD
- Median household income: 170,151 USD
- Share of annual income spent on housing: 21.5%
“To better measure the value of local living costs, housing affordability in the safest neighborhoods was also taken into account,” the researchers added.
The study found that a suburb is 15 to 45 minutes away by car from the 100 largest cities in the U.S. Here is the full list of the 20 safest suburbs in America:
