USWNT returns to number 1 in FIFA world rankings

USWNT returns to number 1 in FIFA world rankings

The United States Women’s National Team is back on top in many ways. After winning the gold medal at the 2024 Olympics, the USWNT has made a huge leap forward in the August 2024 FIFA Women’s Rankings, moving up four spots to once again take the top spot.

Their previous 5th-place finish was the USWNT’s worst finish since the rankings began in 2003. They went undefeated at the Olympics, defeating Zambia, Germany, Australia, Japan, Germany again, and Brazil en route to their fifth gold medal, earning 60.95 points – the second most of any team in the world – and jumping back to No. 1. They also tied Nicaragua for the highest increase of any team, climbing 4 spots compared to the June 2024 rankings.

The top 10 has changed quite a bit due to the results of the Olympic Games. The overall top 10: USA (+4 places), England (+1), Spain (-2), Germany (—), Sweden (+1), Canada (+2), Japan (—), Brazil (+1), North Korea (+1) and France (-8).

The next games for the USWNT are in October, when they face Iceland (13th) in two games and then Argentina (33rd) in a third game. In November, they will face England (2nd) away at Wembley Stadium. After that, they will play one more game in Europe against an as-yet-unnamed opponent.
