  • Epic plans to expand the store after launch with Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Rocket League Sidewipe.
  • Epic’s CEO is planning a global return and is praising the EU for its steps. The goal is to reach tens of millions of installations by the end of 2024.

After years of litigation and court cases, Epic Games has finally brought Fortnite back to iOS and Android… but only in the EU. A brand new Epic Games Store launches today on mobile devices in the EU, allowing games like Fortnite and Fall Guys to be played on mobile devices following the passage of the Digital Markets Act, which Apple to enable third-party shops on its platform.

Fortnite was one of the biggest games on iOS before it was removed in 2020 after a dispute between Epic and Apple over in-app purchases led to the game’s removal. Epic claimed that Fortnite grossed over $700 in the two years it was on the store, making it one of the most profitable platforms for the game. Since then, there has been no official way to play the hit battle royale on mobile in the US. With the passage of the Digital Markets Act in the EU, Apple is forced to allow third-party stores in its app, allowing Fortnite on mobile for the first time in four years.

An Epic Games Store

Only EU…for now

Epic is launching the new Epic Games Store today on both iOS and Android in the EU. It will launch with three of its biggest games: Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Rocket League Sidewipe. In addition to Epic’s official store, these games will also be available through AltStore, with versions for AltStore and Aptoid coming soon. Epic plans to expand its store to include all of its independent games in the future. Epic has posted instructions on its official announcement page on how iPhone and Android users can download its new store.

Following the passage of the DMA bill, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeny praised the European Commission for “really putting pressure on Apple and Google so they can’t just hamper competition.” While this is good news for EU gamers, Epic says there is hope Fortnite will soon be back on mobile elsewhere. “This is just the beginning of our efforts to bring games back to all of these platforms worldwide,” Sweeny said. “The fight isn’t over until Fortnite is back on iOS everywhere and free of Apple’s junk and (tech fees). But this is a great milestone.”

Epic has set high goals for its new mobile store. General Manager Steve Allison explained: “Our goal is to get as many installs as possible – hopefully tens of millions, if not 100 million – before we get to the end of the year, because that’s when we can bring third-party games on board.”

While this isn’t exactly the news Fortnite fans were hoping for, it’s a massive step in bringing the game back to mobile devices worldwide after years of silence. Regulations still prevent this new store from coming to the US, but it seems inevitable that these restrictions will be lifted sooner rather than later. Fortnite remains one of the most popular and profitable games in the industry despite not being available on mobile, and we eagerly await its official return to mobile platforms.
