FIRST WEATHER WARNING DAY | Jim Caldwell says multiple severe storms possible

FIRST WEATHER WARNING DAY | Jim Caldwell says multiple severe storms possible

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – A dynamic weather system will bring several rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms to the region today, with more severe thunderstorms likely Saturday evening.

Today’s storms will occur in two clearly defined cycles: morning and evening.

Morning round

The morning round of storms will develop ahead of a strong cold front driven by a strong low pressure system. As the storms mature, they will be sufficiently unstable and wind shearing to warrant severe thunderstorm warnings. The primary danger from these storms will be damaging winds with gusts up to 60 mph. While large hail is possible, the risk remains relatively low. In addition, a very small risk of a spin-up tornado cannot be completely ruled out, although this is not the primary concern.

Afternoon and evening rounds

The afternoon and evening storms will develop as the cold front meets the warm, moist air locally. These storms may also produce severe weather, with damaging winds remaining the primary threat. Heavy hail is also possible here, but the risk remains low. The evening storms will be particularly severe, with the potential for widespread severe weather.

Saturday evening: Great opportunities

Severe thunderstorms will return Saturday night, driven by the same dynamic system. The configuration will be similar to today, with damaging winds and large hail the main concerns. Although the risk of a spin-up tornado remains low, it cannot be completely ruled out.

Sunday showers and cooler temperatures

On Sunday, the system will slowly pull back, leaving behind some general showers. The bigger issue, however, will be the significantly cooler temperatures, with highs barely reaching 80°. This will mark the start of a brief but pronounced cool spell, and a fall-like feel will set in early next week.

Autumn feeling ahead

Temperatures will continue to be cooler as we begin next week, with highs around 21 degrees and lows around 10 degrees. This is a welcome break from the typical summer heat and a reminder that fall is just around the corner.

Take care of each other!
