Friday’s headlines: Turkey Day comes earlier

Friday’s headlines: Turkey Day comes earlier

The big story yesterday was the news published by the Times that federal prosecutors had issued subpoenas to Mayor Adams, his campaign staff and his City Hall office related to possible illegal campaign activities involving the Turkish government and this weird thing with the FDNY and the Turkish consulate.

Everyone followed the initial report, including the Post, the Daily News and Gothamist, but ultimately nothing came close to the deliciously crazy graphic by Times writers Willie Rashbaum and Dana Rubenstein:

The new subpoenas came nearly nine months after the corruption investigation first became public and significantly altered the city’s political landscape. Since then, the mayor has become a political target, with declining approval ratings and at least three challengers in the 2025 Democratic primary.

Pretty.

More news:

  • As we predicted last week, the City Council has approved the rezoning of two areas near the proposed new Metro-North stations in the Bronx — and not only kept the requirement that developers build parking, but also shelled out $2 million for a new parking garage! That doesn’t bode well for the elimination of parking regulations that is at the heart of Mayor Adams’ “City of Yes” rezoning proposal. (NY Times, amNY, The City, Crain’s)
  • Attention, lawbreakers: Surveillance cameras mounted on buses that previously only issued warnings are now spitting out real tickets. (amNY, Gothamist)
  • Now drivers are complaining to the post office about the alleged return of the “scraper men”.
  • New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy is just awful. First he underfunded New Jersey Transit. Then he raised fares by 15 percent. And now, after a series of easily predictable service failures (the kind that happen when you underfund transit), he’s giving beleaguered riders a week of free rides. Trust us, they just want better transit. (NY Times)
  • The merchants marched to City Hall to reiterate their long-held view that the current permitting system, which we have previously reported on, is not working. (amNY)
  • One of these regular searches for ghost vehicles almost ended in violence. (amNY)
  • How about this: A news channel that cares about cops parking on the sidewalk?! Awesome. (WPIX11)
