Karen Read supporters protest fundraiser by Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey – NBC Boston

Supporters of Karen Read are calling on Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey to resign.

Dozens protested outside his fundraiser in Quincy, Massachusetts on Thursday.

Morrissey’s office is prosecuting Read, who is accused of hitting and killing her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, with her SUV. Read’s defense argued that she was caught up in a wide-ranging cover-up.

A jury that could not agree led to a mistrial, and prosecutors have said they will retry the case. The defense has asked for two counts – second-degree murder and leaving the scene of an accident causing death – to be dropped, arguing that the jury unanimously rejected both counts and could only disagree on manslaughter.

The lead investigator on the case, Trooper Michael Proctor, was suspended from the Massachusetts State Police pending an internal investigation, and his testimony about the text messages he sent during the investigation of the case raises serious questions about his credibility.

Morrissey’s office, to which Proctor was assigned, was forced to send a Brady letter to 13 criminal defense attorneys informing them that the suspended police officer had been involved in the investigation of their cases.

A well-known Dover doctor is awaiting trial for the murder of his wife, and the defense is pleading for personal text messages and emails from investigators following Trooper Ryan Proctor’s astonishing testimony in the trial of Karen Read.

“He has to go,” said protester Margie Gaul of Middleborough.

“We need justice. We need to find out the truth,” added Rene Rosie Miller of Plymouth, who also attended the protest. “What is he hiding?”

One man at the protest wore a prison jumpsuit with the words “State Prison” written on the back.

“I came disguised as Proctor’s cellmate because I believe he needs to go to prison for what he did.”

While testifying at her trial, Proctor came under fire for text messages he sent to family, friends, coworkers and superiors at the Massachusetts State Police.

NBC10’s Boston Investigators are following the fallout from Massachusetts State Police Officer Michael Proctor’s incriminating testimony in the trial of Karen Read.

“She’s a crazy… bitch,” Proctor said as he read the texts on the witness stand.

In the texts, he made derogatory comments about Read’s health and said he had “not found any nude photos so far” when searching Read’s phone.

O’Keefe was found in the snow outside the Canton home of Brian Albert, a fellow Boston police officer. When a friend said they were “sure the homeowner is going to get some shit,” Proctor replied, “Nah, the homeowner is a Boston police officer too.”

Proctor was appointed lead investigator after state police were called in because Albert has a brother who works for the Canton Police Department. But Proctor’s own connection to other witnesses was questioned at trial. Proctor admitted he has a close relationship with his sister Courtney, who is friends with Julie Albert, the homeowner’s sister-in-law.

In a text message to his sister, Proctor said of Read: “I hope she kills herself.”

Morrissey has been in office since 2010 and was last elected in 2022. His term of office is four years.

“He has to face re-election, and if he runs unopposed this time, we should be ashamed,” said Paul Cristoforo, who organized the protest.

NBC10 Boston reached out to the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office for comment on the protest but did not receive a response.
