Baby Reindeer Stalker Inspiration ‘Hasn’t Seen the Show’ and Says It’s ‘A Work of Fiction’

A woman who believes she was the inspiration for the stalker portrayed in “Baby Reindeer” has said she has not seen the series and has only met its creator two or three times.

Scottish lawyer Fiona Harvey, 58, spoke to Piers Morgan about how she was portrayed as a “stalker” in the hit Netflix black comedy, which she says is defamatory and untrue.

In the series, Richard Gadd plays a version of himself, Donny. The character is largely based on Gadd’s own experiences as a stalker and the impact it had on his relationships and career.

Harvey claimed Gadd was “making money from untrue facts” and denied ever being in his home, contacting his parents or sending thousands of text messages and emails.

She told Piers Morgan that she would take legal action against both Gadd and Netflix and was currently reviewing all her options.

When Morgan asked if she had seen the show, Harvey said, “Not at all. I’ve heard about the court scene, the prison sentences.”

She added: “I haven’t seen any of it… I think I would be sick. It’s taken up a lot of my life. I find it quite obscene. I find it appalling, misogynistic.”

“Some of the death threats online were really horrific. People were calling me. It was absolutely horrific.”

She also claimed that Gadd had “extreme mental health issues” and called the show “fiction.”

Harvey continued: “There are two facts that are correct. That his name is Richard Gadd and that he works as a barman at the Hawley Arms and is on benefits – and that we have met two or three times.”

Jessica Gunning plays Martha, who becomes obsessed with the failed comedian after he offers her a cup of tea, follows him home and scouts out the pub where he works.

However, Harvey denied that the two met that way, claiming she was at a pub having a bite to eat and a drink when Gadd interrupted her conversation with another bartender.

The series, which the Standard described as “thrillingly exciting” and “not for the faint-hearted”, sparked great speculation about the true identity of the stalker portrayed in the show.

The seven-episode series premiered on April 18 and has been viewed 56.5 million times in just 26 days, earning praise from everyone from Stephen King to Cardi B.

Morgan was heavily criticized on social media for going through with the interview, which was called “completely irresponsible reporting” and “trauma porn.”

Viewers of the series raised concerns about Harvey’s mental health and whether he had any duty of care towards her.

In the five years following his first encounter with the alleged stalker, Gadd received over 40,000 emails, 740 tweets, 350 hours of voicemail, 100 pages of letters and 45 Facebook messages.

When asked if she had sent Gadd messages in her interview, Harvey said she had “sent him nothing.” She added there “might have been a few emails” and denied sending him texts or Facebook messages.

During the exclusive interview, Harvey was also shown a clip from the show in which Martha was jailed for stalking. When asked if she had ever been to prison, she said: “No, not even close.”

Gadd initially processed his experiences in the one-man show Baby Reindeer, a reference to the nickname given to him by his alleged stalker.

Harvey admitted that it is true that she owned a toy reindeer, which also served as inspiration for the title of the Netflix show.

Gadd’s one-man show won an award at the Edinburgh Fringe and was performed at London’s Bush Theatre in 2019, where it also won an Olivier Award.

The move to the West End was planned but never opened due to the coronavirus pandemic.
