The takeover by ESPN unfortunately buries the old, reliable WCBS News Radio 880

The takeover by ESPN unfortunately buries the old, reliable WCBS News Radio 880

Since I was a kid, we went everywhere together. Camp, college, Cross Bronx Expressway.

And I am convinced that WCBS News Radio 880 played a role in my desire to become a journalist.

The sports reports, delivered every 20 minutes by renowned sports figures such as Ed Ingles and Spencer Ross and with a reach of hundreds of miles at sunset, were extremely popular.

From my college dorm in southwestern Pennsylvania, 450 miles from NYC, I listened every night. Even “traffic and weather combined” kept my coal-country heritage alive.

WCBS 880 featured current news from the field as well as interesting stories on travel, health, education and law. The well-written commentaries by Charles Osgood and Charles Kuralt were a great way to keep yourself fed during car trips.

And when the signal got weaker on long trips, I looked for affiliate or similar stations in Philly, DC and Atlanta.

But News Radio 880 was condemned to sudden financial death after 57 years: it was sold and replaced by ESPN Radio NY, which was desperately looking for a stronger signal.

However, the signal seems to be the least of the problems.

ESPN-NY is full of boring, dull, redundant shows, all obviously geared towards promoting ESPN/Disney products and anchors, plus irrelevant segments about Aaron Rodgers on a daily basis.

Fake laughter, personal insecurities, personal feuds and childish talk about “men/sex” are typical elements that do not create lasting bonds – unlike thoughtful, independent and personable sports conversations.

And now, of course, there are endless enticements for listeners to lose their money and their minds betting on sporting events.

Au revoir, WCBS News Radio 880. Even when I was a kid – and especially when I was a kid – it did me good.

Steph faces rejection with Olympic antics

When he showed the world that he was special, Steph Curry was determined to prove that he was like everyone else.

In the gold medal win over France, Curry’s extraordinary goals in the closing stages may have been an opportunity to remain humble and let his performance speak for itself.

Instead, he played the show-off, mocking his opponents and looking for cheap dates. What a pity.

This time last year, local media and fans were pushing for the Jets to sign Dalvin Cook, even though he admitted to brutally beating an ex-girlfriend.

What difference did it make to the local media, fans or Roger Goodell, when he beats them, “as long as he can carry the stone!”

The media’s silence is because he was a flop, not because the Jets went so deep into signing him.

By today’s double standards, Jarren Duran of the Red Sox got off lightly and was suspended for two games for homophobically hurling a spectator labeled a “fan.”

Jarren Duran

The Red Sox and irresponsible Rob Manfred could have cured Duran months ago when he so proudly took off his team jersey to show the television audience an unprintable, profane message in postgame interviews.

All they had to do was demand that he stops or sits down. In other words: grow up.

So what does the future hold for NBC after allowing budget airline Vince McMahon to nationalize the sex-infested XFL and creating the Snoop Dogg Olympics in honor of a recidivist criminal, gang member and rapper who denigrates porn and women?

I would stick with Dogg. But add more Snoop-related events, like drive-by shooting contests and Aspiring Rapper Murders.

Incidentally, rapper Travis Scott, who was arrested and released by Paris police at the Olympics for a physical altercation with one of his bodyguards, was one of Goodell’s chosen misogynistic, crotch-grabbing, N-word-spewing, X-rated acts to perform during the Super Bowl halftime break as part of the “End Racism” campaign.

ESPN remains more woke than awake. In its latest attempt to sell Serena Williams As America’s darling – as if America didn’t know any better – it airs a five-part series about her.

ESPN, guess why the movie about your father, King Richard, flopped and lost millions. Could it be because America has learned not to like the Williams family despite the media’s blind pandering?

OK, Chris Russo confused the death of Billy Bean, the former MLB player who openly admitted his homosexuality, with the death of Billy Beane, the still living MLB manager from the hit series “Moneyball”.

Until I read it in print – Bean vs. Beane – I thought so too.

More Julie, less Megan, please!

Julie Foudy, former U.S. soccer standout and NBC commentator for the women’s soccer final between Brazil and the United States, was great.

She was poised, alert and proactive. Brazil had such a possession advantage in the first half that the U.S. set pieces on free kicks became extremely important, she said, and she handled them fairly.

The only thing marring the broadcast were repeated gunshots from the crowd of Megan Rapinoe, another disgustingly vulgar “ugly American” who US television believes is idolized by the nation.

Dwyane Wade, NBC’s unprepared basketball commentator for the Olympics in men’s basketball, watched repeated shoving and insulting remarks during the final between France and the USA and then happily concluded, “This is what gold medal basketball is all about!”

Sure, who wouldn’t want to be eliminated from an Olympic game where the gold medal is at stake?!

After the Yankees lost 4-1 to the White Sox on Monday, Suzyn Waldman argued that fans and media are hyper-focused on the White Sox’s worst record in the MLB, but the Yankees are unaware of it or simply ignore it. Nonsense.

Are legalized sports betting operators and their sports and media investors facing a crash? The time seems to be right.

1) They have spent huge amounts of money advertising here, there and everywhere.

2) According to their business model, customers run the risk of losing their money – lower returns and fewer customers are guaranteed.

I can’t bet on what you don’t have anymore. Besides, some idiot wakes up every minute.

This Roger Goodell really runs a tight ship. The Commanders have signed receiver Martavis Bryant, a man from Clemson who hasn’t played since 2018 after his third “substance abuse violation.”

The Braves won 1-0 in 10 games against the Giants on Monday. Eight pitchers achieved a total of 33 strikeouts.

Britney Griner cried tears of gratitude when she stand for our national anthem after winning the US gold medal. Great to see, even if it was a hard lesson.

ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball commentator Karl Ravech is apparently on first-name terms with many of the major league players in his area of responsibility. Red Barber, Marty Glickman and Vin Scully would send him to his room, no TV.
