Homeless man from Tucson allegedly threatened to kill at Army-Navy game

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — A homeless Tucson man accused of threatening a “mass casualty incident” at a college football game last year has been taken into federal custody and is awaiting extradition to Rhode Island, according to federal authorities.

Andrew Buchanan, 38, is accused of reporting the threats by cellphone before the Army-Navy game on December 8 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

According to a criminal complaint, the FBI said it received a tip that Buchanan told a family member that they would see him on the news and that there would be a mass casualty incident at Gillette Stadium.

The Army-Navy game went off without incident in front of over 65,000 football fans and authorities were able to trace the call.

Buchanan is also accused of making a threat about expecting a gun attack several days after the football game on the campus of Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island. A student admissions officer reported the call.

Prosecutors said Buchanan would face a charge of interstate threatening communications, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Buchanan, a former resident of Burrillville, Rhode Island, was arrested on July 31 in Tucson, where authorities said he was homeless.
