Flags fly at half-mast for flight instructor who died in helicopter crash

DOTHAN, Alabama (WDHN) — On Wednesday, August 14, flags in the city of Enterprise will fly at half-staff in memory of an Army veteran and flight instructor who was killed last week in a helicopter crash at Fort Novosel.

Enterprise resident Daniel Munger, 46, was killed on August 7 when an AH-64 Apache crashed near Lake Tholocco during “routine flight training” at the base.

On Tuesday, Gov. Kay Ivey ordered Mayor William E. Cooper of Enterprise to fly all flags at half-staff through Wednesday evening. Munger’s funeral will be held the same day at 5 p.m. at the Army Aviation Museum at Fort Novosel.

According to Munger’s obituary, a memorial service is planned for later this month in his home state of Illinois.

Munger was a retired Chief Warrant Officer 3 and contract flight instructor with the 1st Battalion, 14th Aviation Regiment.

Following the fatal accident, a GoFundMe campaign was set up and two Legacy Foodmart gas stations in Enterprise raised gas prices by 20 cents on Sunday to help Munger’s family with funeral expenses.
