Paseo Verde wins first game of Little League World Series 9-1 against New York

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Under the national spotlight of ESPN in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, the Paseo Verde All-Stars made a victorious start to the Little League World Series.

The Henderson team and Mountain Region champions left no room for doubt as they defeated New York’s Staten Island team 9-1 on Thursday. Nevada totaled 11 hits, never trailed and took control of the game after a 3-run third inning.

PV will play its next game on Monday.

Pitcher Wyatt Erickson, who threw a shutout in Paseo Verde’s victory over Montana last week that clinched their World Series berth, threw a complete game for Nevada, allowing just one run and five hits but contributing with a two-run double in his at-bat.

A strong 3rd inning put PV ahead and they weren’t to look back. A hit by Russell McGee brought Nevada a run to break a scoreless tie. In the next at-bat, pitcher Wyatt Erickson did some damage at the plate, smashing a ball past the outfielders and scoring two more runs that gave Team Nevada a 3-0 lead at the halfway point of the game.

After New York got on the scoreboard with a run in the 4th inning, Nevada extended its lead in the bottom of the inning. A single by Luke Lentz loaded the bases and a wild pitch scored a run, giving Nevada a 5-1 lead at the end of the inning.

Paseo Verde took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring four more runs to take a 9-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, a lead that remained until the final score.

Team Nevada will face the winner of the Great Lakes and West Region championships next Monday. The two teams will face off Friday at noon.
