It was the French star who had the edge in the last three encounters, including the all-important one in Paris.

But Potter is the “queen of transitions” – could that prove crucial in this short, sharp format?

And how will the 16-year-old phenomenon Fanni Szalai compete against the Olympic greats?

De Koning is Crown’s U23 athlete (every team must have one in their squad) and will benefit enormously from working with such stars.

More about the Supertri teams

Each team will consist of four women and four men and must include one athlete under 23, in keeping with supertri’s commitment to developing the future of triathlon.

The team managers are as follows:

Brownlee Racing – Not Stanford
Podium race – Tim Don
Crown Racing – Chris McCormack
Stars & Stripes Racing – Parker Spencer

And with nearly $1 million up for grabs in this year’s team prize fund – more than triple what it will be in 2023 – it’s expected to become even more of a focus in the coming months.

The course

The format in Boston – and all Supertri races this season – is ENDURO.

Put simply, these are three consecutive triathlons (all in the order of swimming, cycling and running), with no breaks in between.

And not everyone will reach the finish line, because if an athlete is more than 90 seconds behind the leader at any point, he or she will be eliminated.

The event is part of the famous Boston Triathlon Weekend and starts and finishes at DCR Carson Beach next to the historic McCormack Bath House. The bike and run are in a loop along DCR Day Boulevard.

Each stage consists of 300 m swimming (one lap), 4 km cycling (four laps) and 1.6 km running (two laps).

The rules – and peculiarities – of Supertri

In the Supertri, the “normal” rules do not apply and you can earn a small shortcut, the so-called “Short Chute”, during the race if you cross the finish line first at various points.

You can earn a short chute in Boston as follows:

  1. the first athlete to cross the Mount Line after swimming on Stage 1,
  2. the first over the Mount Line after the bike on stage 1 (i.e. after T2)
  3. the first over the dismount line after the run on stage 1.

Short Chutes are won for a team and awarded to an athlete during the race by their team manager. Short Chutes must be completed on the first lap of the race in Leg 3. No team can win more than one Short Chute.
