Sheriff’s deputy honored for saving newborn’s life during delivery

An Alabama deputy sheriff who was hailed as a hero is being honored for his heroic act when he came to the aid of a mother and her baby.

“When I opened the door, I saw a young woman lying on the floor and another middle-aged woman yelling, ‘Help me, help me.’ And she’s obviously having a baby,” said a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy.

The woman seen in the officer’s body camera footage screamed for help because the newborn’s umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck.

Sergeant Jeremy Barbin was stopped outside by a man screaming in despair because his pregnant girlfriend had gone into labor at a nearby house.

Barbin’s footage shows Barbin running after the man and putting on gloves before the two enter the apartment.

At the door you can see the woman on the floor and a woman screaming for help.

“Please, can someone help me? Please, sir. Please,” the woman screams.

“We immediately intervened to assist in the delivery of the baby and to safely unwrap the umbilical cord from the baby’s neck,” Barbin said.

Warning: The video shows a birth. Some viewers may find the footage very graphic.

The baby and mother were examined by paramedics and then taken to a hospital.

In a video posted by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, he explained why he believed he was called to serve.

“I believe God sends us to certain places to help, and it’s just the right place at the right time,” said Barbin

Barbin will receive a “Lifesaving Medal” at the police academy’s graduation ceremony on Friday.

It’s not every day that a deputy has the extraordinary experience of delivering a baby while on the job. This remarkable event demonstrates the dedication and professionalism of our law enforcement officers who are always willing to go above and beyond in unexpected situations – Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office
