Drunk driver sentenced to life in prison for running family off road in Ocala, killing mother and daughter

A South Florida man who drove with nearly three times the legal blood alcohol content on U.S. Highway 441 in Ocala on Thanksgiving 2021 has been sentenced to life in prison for causing a fatal crash that killed a mother and her daughter.

On Wednesday, Logan Levi Alexander Weir of Boca Raton was sentenced to life in prison for 10 different crimes in connection with the crash that killed Heidy Martinez and her mother, Adriana Martinez.

Weir, who turned 35 last month, was found guilty on all 10 counts, including two counts of manslaughter while under the influence of alcohol and two counts of involuntary manslaughter.

The verdict comes just months before the third anniversary of the fatal accident, which occurred on November 24, 2021.

That day, Weir was driving a pickup truck north on U.S. Highway 441 in Ocala, near the intersection with NW 95th Street.

Weir was driving at a high rate of speed and was unable to slow his vehicle before colliding with the rear of a van occupied by members of the Martinez family.

After the collision, both vehicles turned clockwise, left the road and ended up on the grass verge to the east.

The impact ripped open the left rear section of the van before the vehicle overturned and tipped onto the grass verge of the hard shoulder.

Four of the family members in the van were thrown out, including 32-year-old Heidy and 61-year-old Adriana, both of whom were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Weir was initially arrested following the accident. He served three days in jail before being released on bail on November 24, 2021.

According to Adriana’s sister Lizette Sanchez, the Martinez family was on their way to North Carolina for a “long-awaited family trip” when the fatal accident occurred.

“The emptiness and sadness this incident has caused is endless and the pain that family, friends and acquaintances have suffered from her loss is irreversible,” said a statement released by Sanchez in November 2022.

Court records show that Weir pleaded no contest to all 10 counts on June 11, 2024. In addition to the life sentence, Weir must also pay tens of thousands of dollars in court fines and was given credit for the three days he previously served.
