Two Texas A&M Aggies defenders on Lombardi Award watch list

In a season where the 12th Man is hoping to finally bring the national championship back to Aggieland, many Aggies could also come home with individual trophies.

The list of nominees for the Lombardi Award, given to the college football player who embodies the values and spirit of Hall of Fame Packers coach Vince Lombardi, was announced Thursday, and two passionate Aggie defensive ends were named to the list: Shemar Turner and Nic Scourton.

The two edge rushers definitely show their love for the game and their fiery passion on the field, two key components of what made Vince Lombardi the icon he is.

In 2023, Shemar Turner made his presence felt on the Aggie defense. The senior linebacker from DeSoto recorded 16 solo tackles, 17 assisted tackles, six sacks and forced two fumbles. With his fiery style of play, it almost seems like A&M could afford to lose Edgerrin Cooper to the draft. They still have plenty of firepower on defense.

As if they hadn’t already done that, they brought in edge rusher Nic Scourton from Purdue in the offseason. Scourton is from the Bryan-College Station area, so he will naturally be welcomed home with open arms.

However, Scourton also deserves praise for his play on the field. His 10 sacks led the Big 10 Conference in 2023, and his 50 total tackles and only forced fumble make him a force to be reckoned with and one that opposing offenses should definitely include in their game plans.
