Dodgers’ Tyler Glasnow gets extra rest day before game against Cardinals

Tyler Glasnow, starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, will face the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday instead of Friday. Glasnow was originally scheduled to play on Friday after four days of rest, but the team is granting him an additional fifth day of rest.

Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register was one of the reporters on the Milwaukee team who reported the news.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts noted that the team is considering several options for pitcher to replace Glasnow, including Justin Wrobleski. Wrobleski, 24, has started four games for Los Angeles this season, going 0-1 with a 4.05 ERA and 15 strikeouts. The Dodgers’ best young starter has been River Ryan, but the rookie will have to undergo Tommy John surgery after suffering a strained UCL.

The likely start for Wrobleski gives Glasnow an extra day of rest. Glasnow last started for the Dodgers on Sunday in the team’s 6-5 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. In that start, Glasnow pitched 7.0 innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs and one walk, and recording four strikeouts.

The Dodgers’ top prospect, who was traded to the team from the Tampa Bay Rays last season, was on the injured list early in the season with a lower back injury. Although Glasnow did not spend much time on the injured list, the Dodgers want to prioritize the health of the starting pitchers they have at their disposal.

As Plunkett noted, Dodgers pitchers have only started with four days of rest seven times this season. Gavin Stone has done it three times, and no one else has done it more than once.

Ryan’s Tommy John surgery was just the latest of countless injuries the Dodgers have suffered in their bullpen this season. Dodgers pitchers such as Glasnow, Ryan, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Clayton Kershaw, Dustin May, Walker Buehler, Tony Gonsolin, Emmett Sheehan, Kyle Hurt, Brusdar Graterol and Michael Grove have all missed time this season due to injury.

Because of these injuries, the Dodgers have used 17 starting pitchers this season, more than any other MLB team.

While the Dodgers were able to overcome these injuries during the regular season, as the postseason approaches, they want to avoid further injuries and ensure that players like Glasnow remain rested as long as possible.

The 30-year-old has started 22 games for the Dodgers this season, posting a 9-6 record with a 3.49 ERA and 168 strikeouts, the fourth-most strikeouts in MLB.

Glasnow has already started more games and pitched more innings this season than in any previous season, which could be another reason for the extra day between his starts.
