The titles in the PlayStation Plus games catalog for August include a huge open-world classic

Sony has announced a huge amount of games that will be added to the PS Plus games catalog this month.

There are 15 titles, including the return of The Witcher 3, which was playable in 2021 on the predecessor to what we have today, called PlayStation Now.

The games will be available from August 20. There are the newer titles that PS Plus Extra or Premium subscription holders can access, and the older retro and VR games that only PlayStation Plus Premium members can try.

Here are the games:

  • Cult of the Lamb

  • Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker

  • Ride 5 (PS5 only)

  • Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris

  • Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet

  • Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization

  • Sword Art Online: Last Memory

  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

  • Watchdogs 2

  • Wild Hearts (PS5 only)

And the games available for PS Plus Premium subscribers:

  • Sword Art Online: The Lost Song

  • Time fragments

  • Time fragments 2

  • TimeSplitters: Future Perfect

  • Holiday Simulator (PS VR2 only)

Your first reaction to this list might be: What’s with all the Sword Art Online titles? These are role-playing games based on an anime series where real players are trapped in an online role-playing game.

It’s a game about games, but it wouldn’t be our first recommendation from the games added to the games catalog in August.

The Sorcerer 3: Wild Hunt is the best game of all, receiving a 95 percent Metacritic score upon its release in 2015. But the game hasn’t stood still since then. It was remastered for a new generation of consoles in 2022.

In case you missed this hit with 50 million copies sold, it’s an epic fantasy role-playing game in which you play monster hunter and witcher Geralt of Rivia as he searches for his adopted daughter Ciri, who is being pursued by the mysterious Wild Hunt, a band of otherworldly horsemen.

This is just one of three massive open-world games you can choose from this month. There are also Watchdogs 2 by Ubisoft, a futuristic title in which you play a hacker in San Francisco trying to shut down the city’s surveillance system.

2016’s Watch Dogs 2 isn’t as fondly remembered as The Witcher 3, but it was highly praised upon release, earning an 82 percent Metacritic score. It’s definitely worth a try if you like the idea of taking on the role of a stealthy hacker.

Wild Hearts is another open-world hit, and a much newer one. This 2023 game is only for PlayStation 5 players and is based on the formula of the Monster Hunter games.

You roam a large, attractive environment and must find and defeat epic creatures. This title also received good reviews, receiving 79 percent from Metacritic. Unlike The Witcher 3, this title doesn’t rely too heavily on the story, but if you like fighting and gradually improving your equipment and skills, Wild Hearts should satisfy you.

If you want something completely different, try the motorcycle racing game available only on PlayStation 5 Trip 5. When it was released in 2023, this was considered a graphical showcase game – you can watch videos on YouTube of how realistic the first person mode looks.

You probably have to be a big racing fan to really get into Ride 5. Mario Kart it isn’t. But reviews emphasize the depth of its physics and the satisfying challenge it offers for those willing to really dig into the driving model.
