Madison County campground experiences severe flooding after Debby

MADISON COUNTY, Fla. (WCTV) – Flooding from Debby threatens homes and businesses as water levels continue to rise days after the storm inundated the Big Bend.

The Ragans Family Campground in Madison County had to be temporarily closed due to severe flooding; picnic tables, benches and grills were partially submerged in water.

Campground manager Edward Carlick said the campground experienced minor flooding during Hurricane Debby, which he said was the worst. But about two days later, the water began to rise and eventually flooded the entire park, forcing him to evacuate hundreds of campers.

“It’s been heartbreaking, you know, and it’s a lot of work,” Carlick said. “I don’t even know what to do. I’m just waiting for the floodwaters to stop rising and then we’ll see.”

Carlick and his team had previously tried to pump out some of the water, but it didn’t work. He said flooding in the park intensified Wednesday night, and he expects it could get worse before it gets better.
