Asia Rugby is proud to announce a major milestone in its journey to strengthen rugby across the continent. For the first time in history, Asia Rugby will have a direct qualification place for the 2027 Men’s Rugby World Cup, to be held in Australia. The champion of the 2025 Asia Rugby Men’s Championship will secure a coveted place in the world’s premier rugby tournament.

This historic achievement is a testament to the tireless efforts of Asia Rugby’s leadership and their commitment to advancing the sport in Asia. Securing a direct place has been a key strategic objective for over a decade and now marks a turning point for the region’s rugby landscape.

Japan has already qualified and the additional direct qualification place for Team Asia 1 opens up the possibility of three Asian teams competing on the world stage through the final qualifying tournament. This unprecedented opportunity underlines the growing strength and competitiveness of rugby in Asia.

Qais Al Dhalai, President of Asia Rugby, expressed his pride in the achievement: “This is a milestone for Asian rugby. Securing a direct qualification place is not only a victory for our top teams, but a victory for every rugby nation in Asia. It reflects our growing competitiveness and our vision to place Asian rugby on the world stage.”

Mr Asanga Seneviratne, Chairman of the Asia Rugby Competitions Committee, added: “This direct qualification is the result of dedicated efforts by the Asia Rugby Committees since 2012, as well as the investment and strategic planning of our member nations. This will inspire our associations to aim higher and work harder, knowing that the world stage is within reach. The future of rugby in Asia is brighter than ever.”

This announcement follows World Rugby’s confirmation of the expanded qualification process for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. The World Cup will feature 24 teams, reflecting the governing body’s mission to drive the global growth of the sport.
