Community response to parents’ arrest in connection with the death of their 12-year-old daughter

ATASCOSA COUNTY, Texas – Two communities are mourning the loss of a 12-year-old girl who died earlier this week.

Miranda Sipps was pronounced dead Monday and her mother and stepfather face charges in connection with her death, according to the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff David Soward said Sipps suffered life-threatening injuries in an incident last Thursday night around 6 p.m. According to ACSO, the parents “confessed” and said they did what they could to help their daughter.

Sheriff Soward said the parents did not notify authorities of her condition until Monday, four days after she sustained her injuries. \

Soward said the parents then tried to take her to the hospital on Monday. Emergency services then met the family on the street and attempted to treat them.

Sipps was taken to a nearby hospital, where she died after about an hour of medical treatment, according to Soward.

In connection with her death, the parents are each accused of child injury through omission, i.e. they did not provide medical care for their child.

According to ACSO, no one else was home at the time of the incident.

Sheriff Soward said service calls to the home had been requested previously.

KSAT is still waiting for more details on why these calls for service were made and how many there were. Soward also said he did not know if there had been a prior welfare check at the home.

The exact cause of Sipps’ injuries is still unclear.
