Whale caught jumping into water during Olympic surfing semi-final

Whale caught jumping into water during Olympic surfing semi-final

The Olympic Games are always an exciting experience because you never know what incredible things you might see. Surfers Tatiana Weston-Webb of Brazil and Brisa Hennessy of Costa Rica competed in a semifinal on the French Polynesian island of Tahiti on August 5, and while they were waiting for their next waves, an unexpected visitor showed up.

NBC Olympics & Paralympics posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, August 6, showing a whale appearing in the background as the two surfers wait patiently for their perfect wave. The video is only 7 seconds long, but the timing is perfect. I bet it freaked the ladies out to see a whale so close!

Imagine if the whole world was watching you and then the whole world saw this once in a lifetime moment! Commenters on X left some pretty funny memes in response to the NBC Olympics video. @TyLucky left a video of the whale jumping out of the water with “Whale, hello there!” underneath. @Gustavo left some judges from The Simpsons Cartoon holding up signs with the number 10. @Ron Matthews wondered: “What was the score for the whale? Looks like his trick was a good one!”

Cool animals and Olympic moments

This wasn’t the first cool surfing moment at this year’s Olympics. Remember the photo of Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina seemingly floating in mid-air in late July? Medina, 30, had his hand raised in the air, finger pointed to the sky, while his surfboard floated behind him, still attached to his ankle. It was one of the coolest photos I’ve ever seen!

People on social media are taking full advantage of the opportunity to create content about the games with their pets and animals. Zoo Atlanta posted a video of the different events some of their residents would participate in if they were on Team USA. My favorite was their young gorilla Floyd’s breakdancing, which should definitely be an Olympic event!

Butler University posted a video of their bulldog mascot, Blue IV, competing in various events and winning a gold medal for each one. The way he runs the hurdles is a real laugh riot! The Indianapolis Zoo was also there, showcasing their resident Olympic swimmers. And they’re all adorable. And watch this cat act like an Olympic “spotter” and get a perfect 10 while making us all smile.

If you’re like me, you may have wondered how the equestrian team and their horses got across the pond to Paris. Team USA and Team Australia shared all the details in this video. It’s pretty cool!

I can’t believe the Olympics are almost over! I had so much fun watching all the amazing athletes from around the world compete and set so many new records. It was an exciting Summer Olympics and I’m already looking forward to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan!
