Browns defense dominates on first day of joint training with Vikings

Vikings attack against Browns defense

The Browns defense welcomed a talented group of Vikings pass catchers to the CrossCountry Mortgage Campus on Wednesday, led by star WR Justin Jefferson.

Quarterback Sam Darnold stepped in for the Vikings offense against a grim Browns defense that was obviously eager to face unfamiliar faces after playing against their teammates all training camp.

Here are some of the defensive highlights from a busy day at training camp.

Browns pass rush dominates

DE Myles Garrett was an impressive sight Wednesday afternoon, weaving through and overrunning Vikings offensive linemen in pursuit of Darnold. Garrett had at least three sacks and several pressure situations that forced Darnold to give up the ball early.

Along the line, LB Caleb Johnson, DE Ogbo Okoronkwo and DE Alex Wright also sacked Vikings quarterbacks, each drawing an outcry from the Browns defensive line. After Garrett left the field following the first 11-on-11 drill, his injured teammates DT Dalvin Tomlinson and DE Za’Darius Smith clapped him for his dominant performance against the Vikings.

Vikings WRs don’t disappoint against Browns Secondary

The Browns secondary had a good day against the Vikings wide receivers and was certainly helped by their teammates at the line of scrimmage.

Covering Jefferson is no easy task, though. Toward the end of practice, Jefferson beat CB Martin Emerson Jr. on a long ball from Darnold – who, according to Browns defenders, was “sacked” on the play.

Emerson and Jefferson engaged in an exciting battle throughout practice, with Emerson making some nice plays, including blocking a long pass earlier in the day.

CB Myles Harden had an explosive day in coverage, throwing two interceptions against QB Nick Mullens in 11-on-11 drills—one of which he turned into a touchdown.

The Browns’ defensive line was excellent at stopping the run on Wednesday, although the outcome of individual plays was somewhat uncertain without full tackles. DE Ogbo Okoronwko got off to a strong start in the first 11-on-11 period with two stops of RB Aaron Jones. Garrett, DE Isaiah Thomas, CB Cameron Mitchell and S Grant Delpit also had tackles for loss as the Browns had a dominant day at the line of scrimmage.
