Dodgers starter Walker Buehler struggles to return from the injured list and loses to the Brewers

Walker Buehler returned to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday and started against the Milwaukee Brewers after spending nearly two months on the injured list.

Things didn’t go well.

Buehler ran all bases in the first inning and was eventually taken out of the game after allowing four runs in 3 1/3 innings of pitching. The Brewers eventually won 5-4.

Things could have been even worse for Buehler if a sensational double play after an outfield assist from Kevin Kiermaier hadn’t helped him out of a jam with the bases loaded.

Buehler, a two-time All-Star, returned to the rotation for the first time in May after missing a season or more due to Tommy John surgery, and struggled through eight starts that produced a 5.84 ERA and a 1.292 WHIP with 58 strikeouts and 17 walks in 37 innings pitched.

He last played as a pitcher on June 19 before being placed on the injured list due to hip inflammation. Wednesday’s game against the Brewers was his first game since returning.

He entered the mound in the bottom of the first inning with the Dodgers leading 3-0. He then allowed three consecutive walks to Brice Turang, Jackson Chourio and Tyler Black. After 17 pitches upon his return, Buehler had thrown 12 balls without making an out.

However, he came out of the inning unscathed, thanks mainly to Kiermaier’s arm.

With the bases loaded and no outs, William Contreras hit a line drive from Buehler straight to Kiermaier in center field. Kiermaier caught the ball on the run and threw it to home plate while Turang tagged from third base.

The throw was faster than Turang at home base and was taken out of the game by catcher Austin Barnes for a double play.

According to MLB researcher Sarah Langs, Kiermaier’s throw was 99 miles per hour the fastest at an outfield assist since the beginning of the Statcast era in 2015.

Buehler then struck out Willy Adames and ended the inning without allowing a run.

He didn’t do so well in the second inning. Buehler allowed a home run by Jake Bauers in the full count.

Then Sal Frelick reached first base with one out on a fielding error by shortstop Nick Ahmed. Frelick scored on a two-out triple by Turang. Turang then scored on an infield single by Chourio.

The last two runs of the inning were undeserved, but the damage was done. Milwaukee tied the game at 3:3.

Buehler came back with a 1-2-3 in the third inning, but only managed one out in the fourth before his night was over. Buehler walked Garrett Mitchell to open the inning. Mitchell came in on an error by Enrique Hernández and Buehler’s night was over.

Buehler finished the night by allowing four runs and having three strikeouts on three hits, one home run and four walks. He threw 41 of his 86 pitches as a ball. The positive for Buehler is that only one of those runs was earned.

Buehler’s return comes at a timely pace for the Dodgers after rookie River Ryan became the latest rotation member to land on the injured list this season with an elbow injury and will have to undergo Tommy John surgery.

The Dodgers, who have a 2.5-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West, are now hoping that Buehler stays healthy and returns to form for the final phase and the playoffs.
