Amherst County Sheriff’s Office finds human remains believed to be Elsie Wiggington

AMHERST COUNTY, Virginia. – The Amherst County Sheriff’s Office believes it has found human remains of Elsie Wiggington.

Officers were at Elsie’s home on Pendleton Drive. Later that afternoon, Sheriff Jimmy Ayers called a press conference.

“During a search of the property, human remains were found,” Ayers said. “All indications lead us to believe the remains are those of Elsie May Wiggington.”

She was 45 years old.

“We are waiting for DNA confirmation from the Roanoke coroner’s office to confirm that identity,” Ayers said.

Ayers also confirmed that Elsie’s husband, Frederick, was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Augusta County for concealing a body.

“I told the family that Elsie was my biggest concern. Today I feel like we have brought some justice to her by finding her,” Ayers said.

The Amherst County Sheriff’s Office has been working around the clock to bring justice to Elsie’s family.

“The community needs to know that when our department learned that Mrs. Wiggington was missing last year, we immediately launched an active investigation,” Ayers said at the news conference. “Many, many man-hours have been invested in the search for Elsie,” Ayers said.

Ayers said the investigation is ongoing and further charges may follow.
