Alta Journal’s California Bestseller List (August 8, 2024)

With reports from the California Independent Booksellers Alliance, Alta-Journal brings you a list of the best-selling titles in independent bookstores in Northern and Southern California for the week ending August 4, 2024.

Two books with strong female protagonists are on the bestseller list this week. In Sarah Manguso’s new novel LiarJane meets John – a seemingly perfect man by Jane’s standards. But their marriage falls apart when Jane focuses on her career. (Interested readers should definitely check out: Alta‘S questions and answers with Manguso for further insights into Liar.) Also on the list is My brilliant friend by Elena Ferrante (translated by Ann Goldstein). In this 2011 novel, two girls – Elena and Lila – form a friendship that develops as the pair grow into women and eventually become mothers.
