Five-year-old La’Rayah Davis became involved in a persistent Custody dispute between her two parents. But before her father, Daunan Davis, could get sole custody, La’Rayah was found unconscious in the Las Vegas Home of former NFL running back Cierre Wood. After being hospitalized with multiple injuries, La’Rayah was pronounced dead on April 9, 2019, according to the Guardian.

Five days after La’Rayah’s body was found, her mother Amy Taylor and Taylor’s boyfriend Wood were arrested and charged with murder, according to the New York PostFive years later, Clark County District Court Judge Jacqueline Bluth sentenced Wood, 33, to life in prison after he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and child abuse. A coroner’s report from Las Vegas, which is available USA Today La’Rayah died of blunt force trauma and a lacerated liver. The documents also note that the five-year-old suffered 20 broken ribs, internal bleeding, skull injuries, and bruising to her heart, diaphragm, and connective tissue.

According to court documents, both Wood and Taylor abused La’Rayah. Taylor, 31, even admitted that she once sat on her daughter’s chest and stomach as punishment. According to KSNVWood told police he believed La’Rayah was overweight, so he was forcing her to exercise as punishment. He said he was “trying to get her on the right path because she’s so fat.”

La’Rayah’s father told Las Vegas today He hoped both Wood and Taylor would receive the death penalty. An emotional Davis said, “They deserve to be out of here.”

According to his Alford plea, Wood will be eligible for parole after serving 10 years in prison. Judge Bluth also ordered him to serve a sentence of between 28 months and 6 years for child abuse. AP NewsCourt records show that Taylor also pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and child abuse.

Wood played for the University of Notre Dame from 2009 to 2012 before briefly playing for three NFL teams and the Montreal Alouettes in Canada.
