Family identifies victims of Marathon watercraft accident as father and 8-year-old son

MARATHON, Florida. – Family members have identified the victims of a fatal personal watercraft accident Tuesday night in Marathon as a man and his young son.

Jose Dominguez and his son Daniel Dominguez were killed when the watercraft crashed into a seawall along a mobile home park in the 15th Street Ocean area around 6:45 p.m.

Residents jumped into the water to help, and people at the nearby Castaway Waterfront Restaurant & Sushi Bar called 911.

“I just heard it and then the impact, and it was demonstrative,” said Ed Kiefer, the trailer park’s property manager. “It was like two cars colliding head-on.”

Kiefer said: “The little boy was screaming and screaming in pain.”

Family members said Daniel was only 8 years old. They said the Dominguezes recently moved from Miami to the Florida Keys because they liked the area so much.

A video obtained by Local 10 News shows the watercraft traveling through a canal shortly before the accident.

Witnesses said they saw watercraft out there throughout the day and at times thought they were speeding.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the crash.

“It was a jet ski with a young boy and his father on board. They somehow lost control of the jet ski, collided with a seawall and succumbed to their injuries,” said FWC Captain David Dipre.

Daniel was scheduled to start classes at Stanley Switlik Elementary School on Wednesday.

The loss of a child’s life “should never happen,” Dipre said.
