Chris “Mad Dog” Russo criticizes the importance of the gold medal in US men’s basketball in an epic tirade

Chris “Mad Dog” Russo is back.

Russo, who has made his living with his bombastic statements and incredible personality on radio and television, was back on ESPN’s First attempt on Wednesday, much to the dismay of Stephen A. Smith and the rest of the cast in attendance. The topic of the day on Wednesday was the significance (or lack thereof) of the U.S. men’s basketball team’s recent gold medal.

“I’m sick of the USA Basketball men’s team making such a big deal out of winning the gold medal,” Russo began, and a sigh was heard in the room. “And ‘Stephon’ Curry putting people to sleep,” Russo continued, mispronouncing Stephen Curry’s name.

“It’s a 10-day tournament. You play six games. And you know what they were favored to win in the gold medal game? By 16 points! They have a million Hall of Famers on this team! And then Durant tweets after the game, ‘Look at me with all these gold medals?’ Calm down, guys, calm down. The most significant gold medal we’ve ever won in basketball, without a doubt, we won in 1976, because that was after we got absolutely slaughtered in Munich in 1972. But the idea that we’re making a big deal out of the fact that Durant, Davis, Embiid, Booker, Curry and LeBron … are some of the greatest basketball players in history. And they beat Evan Fournier? And we’re supposed to go crazy? And ‘Baton’ (Nic Batum)?”

Simply unbelievable. You have to see it to believe it.

The United States is seeking its sixth consecutive gold medal in men’s basketball at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
