How 815 Day Benefits Rockford’s Economy

ROCKFORD, Illinois (WIFR) – Rockford Day, or 815 Day, is an opportunity for community members, businesses and organizations in the area to get involved.

When community members support local businesses and shop locally, money flows back into our economy. This is called the multiplier effect. Local businesses return a larger percentage of their revenue to the local economy.

Yes, 815 Day is about celebrating, but if you attend one of the events at a local business, you’re likely making a significant impact on the community.

“Side jobs are jobs that keep our region running. That includes florists and anyone else who supports the local economy,” said Caitlin Pusateri, president of the Greater Rockford Chamber of Commerce.

According to experts, when you buy something from a local business, 67 cents stays in the community. When you buy something from a chain store, only 43 cents of every dollar stays.

“The more dollars we can bring into the country and keep here instead of sending them somewhere else, the more economic prosperity we create, and that’s really important. So where you shop is important,” Pusateri says.

Many believe this is the true purpose of 815 Day. The day also provides an opportunity for local businesses like Bygone Brand to show why they are proud to be part of the Rockford area.

Bygone Brand owners Amy and Keith Watson say their business is thriving on 815 Day.

“This day is really important because it puts local businesses like ours in the spotlight and brings new people in,” says Amy Watson, co-owner of Bygone Brand.

“We love showcasing Rockford and showing our love for the community,” Watson explains.

Paula Olson, executive director of Miracle Mile Rockford, says 815 Day brings a lot of excitement and joy to the community and local business owners.

“One of the branches in our area says this is their best day of the year, which is unbelievable,” says Olson.

Supporting local businesses on 815 Day can even lead to charitable donations and more jobs for community members. Although the day can be celebrated for several days or even the entire month, local leaders encourage everyone to come out on Thursday to check out the people, places and things that make the Forest City great.
