Neighbors in China Grove paranoid after man on ‘death list’ released on parole

CHINA GROVE, NC (WBTV) – After two years and two months in prison, 26-year-old Hunter Nance was released on parole, leaving his neighbors fearful they might be on his “hit list.”

“The consensus here is that no one wants him back in the neighborhood,” said a neighbor who has not dared to leave the house since Nance returned to the neighborhood in early August.

Nance was convicted of attempted second-degree kidnapping and sent to bars in 2023 after he attacked a woman and began talking to investigators about his “kill list,” which included his parents and former classmates.

“It’s always on your mind when you walk past the house,” said one neighbor.

In February 2023A woman said Nance approached her at a gas station on I-85 in Kannapolis and the two exchanged phone numbers.

According to his arrest warrant, they met again a few hours later at a gas station in China Grove and drove to Nance’s house, where he attempted to “stab her in the chest” with a steak knife.

The woman escaped with some cuts on her hands.

According to his arrest warrant, Nance told investigators during his booking into jail that he planned to stab the woman 25 times and drag her body “on the roadway so that passing vehicles could see it.”

Nance also said he planned to “cut off her fingers before killing her and then eat them in front of her and scare her.”

“This attitude cannot be changed,” said one neighbor. “It could have been my children. And many other people around here feel the same way. They are afraid and very angry at the justice system.”

Several neighbors told WBTV they wanted to understand why the district attorney did not do more to prevent his release.
