When is it safe to enter a multi-lane roundabout?

(WKYT) – In today’s Good Question, Austin asks: Roundabouts are becoming more common throughout the Bluegrass State. However, in multi-lane roundabouts, I notice that Kentuckians have difficulty and often pull out in front of cars in the outside lane of the roundabout. My question is: When is it safe to enter a multi-lane roundabout?

A few years ago, a video from Rowan County went viral because it made it seem like people didn’t know how to navigate a roundabout, but in fact, there were workers giving drivers instructions to go in that direction during the construction of the roundabout.

You should enter a roundabout when there are no other vehicles coming.

For an explanation of roundabouts, see the Kentucky Department of Transportation website.

It is important to be prepared and know which direction you are going. Slow down as you approach and give way to vehicles already in the roundabout.

Also, stay in the correct lane. If there are multiple lanes, it helps to get into the correct lane before turning. At some roundabouts, you must turn at the first intersection if you are in the correct lane.

Never stop at a roundabout. If you miss the exit, continue around the circle and try again.

The Cabinet says: In communities where roundabouts have replaced traditional intersections, the number of fatal accidents has fallen by 90%
