The success of Baldur’s Gate 3 knows no bounds: Larian Studios wins the most prestigious fantasy and science fiction award

There are works that keep video game lovers hooked for days, weeks and months, but Baldur’s Gate 3 is on another level. More than a year after its release on PC, where it remains among the most played titles, its creators continue to collect awards. However, the latest statuette that hit the shelves of Larian Studios is truly special: the members of the World Science Fiction Convention crowned the essential RPG with the award the Hugo Award 2024 for the best video game or interactive work.

What are the Hugo Awards? They are highly regarded by authors and culture enthusiasts the most prestigious awards for science fiction worksranging from comics to novels, including feature films or individual artists. In the case of Baldur’s Gate 3beat out 165 other nominees, with other video games such as Alan Wake 2, Chants of Sennaar and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom standing out among the finalists. Overall, the Dungeons & Dragons universe was successful twice this year.

This year’s Hugo 2024 Award for Best Feature Film went to the film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, set in the same fantasy universe and not too far from Baldur’s Gate itself in terms of distance. Double triumph for Wizards of the Coast in a momentous year for the dean of role-playing games, who turns 50 and is about to release a new edition of the manuals. However, a special mention must be made to the big surprise from PlayStation Productions.

The award for Best Short Drama went to the episode Mucho Mucho Tiempo from the series The Last of Us for HBO Max. For information, this is the third chapter of the first season, written by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann himself and directed by Peter Hoar. An achievement in itself, as it offers a completely new story around the game, in which Bill, played by Nick Offerman, has convinced not only the jury of all the nominations, but also the audience of the first season.

This mechanic from The Getaway was incredible and I don't understand why I haven't seen it again in another video game.

Among other notable awards we find the best novel for A desperate fame by Emily Tesh (Amazon is already boasting about its recently acquired Hugo) or the comic Saga #11 with a script by Brian K. Vaughan and drawings by Fiona Staples. The consolidation of something that we already took for granted, but it is worth remembering: both 2023 and the beginning of 2024 were a dream stage for lovers of fantasy and science fiction.
