Australian team sets record with triplets in Little League World Series

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT – It seems like the Australian team has already made history before its first game in the Little League World Series.

Little League officials believe this is the first time a team has had triplets, as is the case in New South Wales: Fletcher, Hudson and Spencer Dobb.

There have been twins in the past, but there is no evidence in the records that any team had triplets, said Kevin Fountain, Little League spokesman.

Fletcher is a catcher, Spencer is a shortstop and Hudson is a second baseman. Their father, Adam Dobb, is the manager.

“It’s incredible,” he said of coaching his three sons in the World Series. “Talk about your proud parent moment. This is it.”

The boys said they were excited to make it to the series. The family has been to the U.S. before, but never to the Little League complex in South Williamsport, Dobb said.

Australia also has the only girl in the series this year. Emma Gainsford is an outfielder and pitcher. At 5-6, she is one of the tallest players on the team.

“I want the players to enjoy the experience,” Dobb said, adding that he wanted to make sure they “bring honor to themselves and their country.”

They come into the series with two losses in the group stage of their country’s tournament, but won the championship game 16-3.

The Australians come from the same league that represented the country last year. Although none of those players are returning, they have been very informative and helpful, Dobb said.

They talked about their experiences and what to take away and what not to take away, he said. This is his second term as manager, the first being in 2015 and 2016.

Two things remain the same for the Aussies: an inflatable kangaroo as a mascot and the family members and fans who make the 31-hour journey to South Williamsport.

Australia received a bye in the first round and will not play its first game until Friday at 5:00 p.m.
