A 12-year-old Sarasota student who was seriously injured in a collision with an SUV while taking his children to school on the first day of school is now responsive and in stable condition, a Sarasota County School District spokesman said Wednesday.

The girl who was hit near Booker Middle School early Monday morning underwent surgery for her injuries, the district spokesman said. She was flown by helicopter to All Children’s Hospital on Monday after the crash and arrived in critical condition, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A 30-year-old female driver was westbound in the right-turn lane on Myrtle Street west of Newtown Boulevard in front of the school when the student dropped markers and pens as she got out of the car. She bent down to pick up her belongings from under the car when the driver sped off and the wheels struck the girl, according to the FHP.

Following Monday’s accident, Sarasota Schools Superintendent Terry Connor said it was an important reminder to stay alert and attentive when driving in school zones.

“It’s just an important reminder to be vigilant, be aware of your surroundings and make sure all protocols are followed for a safe parental handover,” he said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with this family.”
