The world’s largest single capacity floating wind platform has two turbines

Mingyang Smart Energy’s giant 16.6 megawatt (MW) OceanX, with its twin-turbine, “V”-shaped floating wind platform, is a groundbreaking innovation.

Designed for operation in deep waters (115 feet or 35 meters), the OceanX was designed by MingYang Smart Energy and built by Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Company and China State Shipbuilding Corp.

It consists of two MySE8.3-180 hybrid wind turbines with rotor blade diameters of 182 meters and an output of 8.3 MW each. They can generate 54 million kWh annually, which is enough to power 30,000 Chinese households. They are also robust enough to withstand wind speeds of up to 260 km/h – and produce electricity continuously.

OceanX’s 16,500-ton (15,000-metric-ton) floating platform is built from “ultra-high-strength concrete” and features a cable-stayed system. Its single-point mooring system allows it to ride waves up to 30 meters high.

The single-capacity floating wind platform launched from Guangzhou, China, three days ago and is currently en route to the Qingzhou IV offshore wind farm in Yangjiang, Gangdong. It has a 191-nautical-mile journey ahead of it and is expected to reach its destination in 72 hours. Its massive rotor blades have been tuned to minimize the platform’s air profile during its journey.

Floating offshore wind turbines enable the construction of wind farms in deeper waters, where the wind is stronger and more consistent. Floating offshore wind turbines are gaining importance in China, but also in Europe and America. Several pilot projects and commercial developments are already underway.
