Bucs HC Todd Bowles reveals plan for first preseason game against Bengals

Bucs HC Todd Bowles reveals plan for first preseason game against Bengals

On Saturday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will face the Cincinnati Bengals in their first preseason game of the year, and when they take the field that night, there won’t be too many regular players on the field.

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles spoke to the media after Day 12 of mandatory minicamp, and when asked who will play in the preseason, Bowles revealed that it will be mostly reserve players – at least for the first game of the preseason.

“Most of the regulars aren’t going to play,” Bowles said. “Depending on who’s injured and who’s not, maybe two or three of them will be there for a series or two, but most of them aren’t going to play.”

Bowles said that this is simply the plan for this game and cannot be applied to other preseason games. He also mentioned that the substitutes who play will be chosen based on a number of different factors, but will mostly depend on how much certain players have played in practice.

“How much they get in practice. We have two practices against two teams in the next few weeks,” Bowles said. “You see more volume in practice than in games. How much they get in practice, how much volume they get, who gets hurt, who doesn’t, where I think we need more continuity — all of that plays a role.”
